There are three flavors of mini-crate right now: Warmachine & Hordes, Savage (Essentially like Conan the Barbarian), and Legend of the Five Rings. Yorrik & I enjoy L5R, so those have been of particular to us. With Covid keeping us home, we decided to split a subscription.<br /><br />If you aren't familiar, the idea is basically a Mini-of-the-Month club. You can either buy them one at a time, or pay to receive 6 minis over the course of 6 months (and a 7th if you pay for all 6 months at once). These are new, limited edition minis. They only make as many minis as they have orders for, so if you don't order the mini by the deadline, you'll either be out of luck, or have to pay out the nose on eBay. I did manage to find a <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWHoeFRNhxJfZbMl8Eo9fBfJkJsfGotKYxtfC7wq7wNq-oCQ4gOfpuCZ13v4yG62rOWLO2GgVtBSKL1n3ZpAWgyXLX7_QRMkLUvJp4JmPShoLwQvBTyJSEVd5Rsa3ypPe7Cl13pKreNpSZ/s2048/Doji+Ren.jpg">Doji Ren</a> mini that wasn't marked up, so that was my first introduction to painting these.<div><br />I'm not too keen on the business model, since I'm not big on using artificial scarcity, or F.O.M.O. to sell things, but I understand the thinking behind it. </div><div><br /></div><div>The initial price tag is a bit steep at $17 per mini, plus tax (price includes S/H), or $99 for the "VIP" (6 month package). If you subtract a bit for shipping & handling that means you're paying about $13 per mini individually, or $11 per mini for the VIP. It's kind of a niche product, so it makes sense though.<br /><div><br /></div><div>I'm here for minis though, so I'm just gonna stick to my wheelhouse.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I've gotten two shipments so far. They come in these neat boxes.</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCocJLbtJiS1bNiguhQXn-eWCAhE0Irh-dDrWJG97ECrFrnNMDTedRxH4_oBjmGDidfIe5RbwM2Nmemrmwx3TdjY_qiAKcqY0yAjNYGbr5ZfDgPaMPynqshG7HJktjipd9pMNGat5y1Rho/s2048/IMG_4576.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1397" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCocJLbtJiS1bNiguhQXn-eWCAhE0Irh-dDrWJG97ECrFrnNMDTedRxH4_oBjmGDidfIe5RbwM2Nmemrmwx3TdjY_qiAKcqY0yAjNYGbr5ZfDgPaMPynqshG7HJktjipd9pMNGat5y1Rho/s320/IMG_4576.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">On the inside there's a small clamshell with your mini, or minis, if you get the bonus VIP mini.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs9ph3H7t_Fh-uj_eToUR5XxYQrhCGKEJFVkYW1N2OkzZktGNVC7lEwq3ludgiMrQbBr03Fl0Y9Ch_Prf_avTKqx1ZVCY1P2ZWLeHAit1mSqhCyzu-ERiqhQx8fmm-lhbj3TUYHWuknkYf/s2048/IMG_4557.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1471" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs9ph3H7t_Fh-uj_eToUR5XxYQrhCGKEJFVkYW1N2OkzZktGNVC7lEwq3ludgiMrQbBr03Fl0Y9Ch_Prf_avTKqx1ZVCY1P2ZWLeHAit1mSqhCyzu-ERiqhQx8fmm-lhbj3TUYHWuknkYf/s320/IMG_4557.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In addition to the mini, you receive a character card. These sculpts are all based directly on art in the Fantasy Flight LCG, or TTRPG books. For instance, here's the speardancer's book art, and the mini promo art side-by-side.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9aSvcVihuq2ewOodv6tCQK8FqK4IqWodTWK9JuFXdeM8WPCx_S8tOLhA3HvMnJjPd_Ye5pUm4XAXZdjlEla2lan2RmF5UeA-ElOwhIbpiXToOWxkaGb720o8N9H7xVm5Vs18cN9ov3NmI/s1152/Speardancer.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="1152" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9aSvcVihuq2ewOodv6tCQK8FqK4IqWodTWK9JuFXdeM8WPCx_S8tOLhA3HvMnJjPd_Ye5pUm4XAXZdjlEla2lan2RmF5UeA-ElOwhIbpiXToOWxkaGb720o8N9H7xVm5Vs18cN9ov3NmI/w500-h235/Speardancer.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The minis I've seen have had pretty fine mold lines. The spear was kinda bendy & delicate, so it was a little challenging to clean up some of the fiddly bits. They also take a little work to balance nicely on their bases. I like to make it look like minis are standing on top of the basing material, so it takes a little work to get the tabs to glue just right in the bases.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtuk91O-6zxGAJj1CbHNaSk-denfBxfwPZ8keEpeHxBIMkCV1dhByxTXdmb8bjo_CQqMvxYlHzyzMtV5E6vSESFamOVemvOkepmcZOXvM_12gYa_uJ8oBUC_9pqvLfvc4w-ffd8qRaxfqk/s2048/IMG_4561.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1485" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtuk91O-6zxGAJj1CbHNaSk-denfBxfwPZ8keEpeHxBIMkCV1dhByxTXdmb8bjo_CQqMvxYlHzyzMtV5E6vSESFamOVemvOkepmcZOXvM_12gYa_uJ8oBUC_9pqvLfvc4w-ffd8qRaxfqk/s320/IMG_4561.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The mini itself was easy to paint. The lines are nice & clean, the details sharp, so it wasn't hard to pick out specific points, like her ankle wrappings. I painted it over the course of my Monday, so it was decently quick. I tried to replicate the original art, although I decided to skip making it look like she's in moonlight.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH6HtfeDaOvqszLgDqJkjQVY4dSEt7mvpyAai_t-5V2UZteV5k2NK2JRMVHFntCR2i607QR-DZk-hvpCWjcKEb9jvGtHWAP4gHeBDL5KTURVI4Xz2zVGn138VFQIqZF2ofRm2MVEWiBA1L/s2048/IMG_4568.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="I feel pretty good about this one. I like the representations of the characters, and variety of clans, roles, & poses. They need more Crab Clan characters, but I'm kinda biased in that regard. Years ago I started out painting the old Clan War minis, and these remind me a bit of those, albeit a bit slimmer & taller (I'll make a post comparing the products in a few months). If you like L5R, and miss the old Clan War minis, these will fit the bill nicely. Give them a go.</div><div><br /></div><div>~Muninn<br /><div><br /><br /></div></div></div></div>Muninnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16712463133560807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1965954012087805729.post-60201141999985262082020-08-28T11:18:00.006-07:002023-04-01T16:29:10.819-07:00Legend of the Five Rings minis<div>In 2018 <a href="http://privateerpress.com/community/privateer-insider/legend-of-the-five-rings-minicrate-subscriptions-live">Privateer Press announced it was teaming up with Fantasy Flight </a>to create a line of miniatures for the property reboot. These minis would be released as series of limited edition subscriptions, or MiniCrates. Kind of like a Mini-of-the-Month club.<br /><br />Because they are monthly subscriptions, and changing all the time, it can be hard to scrounge up the mini art, so I'm posting them here to make them easier to find. Each "Season" consisted of 6 minis, and a bonus mini for "VIP" subscribers who purchase the entire season.</div><div> </div><div>L5R MiniCrate Season 1 (November 2018 - April 2019):<br />Togashi Yokuni</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; <h2>
<b>High Utility Conscripts, part 1</b></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ever since the new Necromunda kits started coming out I’ve
been eyeing them up for their potential in Warhammer 40k. Having easy to get
plastic kits of diverse human thugs is a boon to converters, especially those
who dream of seeing new and creative armies of the Astra Militarum fill
tournament tables. Now that all six of the classic gangs have kits, I have
started an adventure, taking minis from each kit and converting them for
Warhammer. I intend for this article series to act as a guide, showing some of
the potential each kit has. Each article will be split into three sections:
Paint, Head Swap, and Kit Bash, in order to showcase various levels of
complexity. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br /><br />
<h3>
Paint: Long Live the Fighters (Van Saar)</h3>
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> The Van Saar kit is a boon to 40k overall,
because it provides a base for modelling something that has long been part of
the 40k lore, but until now rarely presented in model form: the armored
bodyglove. Obviously taking a nod from the stilsuits from <i>Dune</i>, I thought a Fremen-style army of Astra Militarum would be
cool.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.imgur.com/pjUuXrs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="588" data-original-width="784" height="240" src="https://i.imgur.com/pjUuXrs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> To
this end, I simply assembled the model (using one of the GW Shattered Dominion
bases), painted it in brown and black, and applied a desert/wasteland palette
to the base. My only regret is the mechandrite/ponytail thing, I think that’s
so distinctive to the Van Saars that it distracts from my intent (if I were to
expand this project I would leave subsequent ponytails off). That said, I’m
very happy with the results – just by changing up the paint scheme and
(especially) the base, the Van Saars can transform from pseudo-mechanicus hive
dwellers into tough-looking death world warriors. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> As
for the kit itself, Van Saars are an excellent proxy for Astra Militarum. The
box contains ten bodies, and each model can be armed with a lasgun (or las
carbine, which is just a stumpier SMG-looking version of the lasgun). </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.imgur.com/t1DLPCG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="775" height="320" src="https://i.imgur.com/t1DLPCG.jpg" width="309" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> For
special/heavy weapon potential there are two interesting opportunities. One is
the “heavy” of the gang, which consists of a guy holding a large laser bazooka
thing on one shoulder. This could easily stand in for a lascannon, though it
lacks the distinctive muzzle of that weapon. There is also a combi-las/melta
gun in the kit, which if you snip off the las-barrel, looks just like a fancy
bullpup meltagun! There are some pistols in the kit too – laspistols and plasma
pistols, namely – for building a sergeant, but the only close combat weapon in
the kit is the techno-wizard staff pictured above. Pistol/rod works just fine
for a sergeant, but I’m vaguely saddened that there isn’t a sleek chainsabre in
the kit.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, with no other bits or kits required (<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">except for the 60mm base for a heavy weapon
team – ed</i>) the Van Saar gang is an excellent base for an Astra Militarum
Regiment.<o:p></o:p></div>
<h3>
<br />Head Swap: Cult of the Yawning Maw (Orlocks)</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I was a little underwhelmed when I first saw the new Orlock
kit. The bodies are blocky, the arms are lanky, the boots are huge, and the
heads are tiny. Frankly I think it’s the worst-looking of the new Necromunda
kits… which is to say, it’s a fine kit, containing lots of cool bits and conversion
potential. I feel like my hobby is an embarrassment of riches sometimes! For
this mini I decided to change the character of the sculpt through a simple head
swap. Orlocks are a good choice for this, as unlike some of the other kits
their neck joint can easily take heads from other kits. Looking at the Orlocks
and their “blue collar workman” aesthetic, I formed a sympathetic bond in my
mind between their look, and the genestealer cultists. Both have a mining
theme, both are wearing hazard gear and fighting with improvised weapons, and
they have a similar “bulkiness” to them that gives them a thematic similarity.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.imgur.com/yqO5Y3M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="588" data-original-width="784" height="240" src="https://i.imgur.com/yqO5Y3M.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So I did a simple head swap. I used one of the heads from
the Genestealer Cult Upgrade Pack. Though meant to be used with Cadians, the
heads fit onto the Orlock bodies like a dream (though to be honest I still feel
they’re a little small compared to the large blocky bodies). I will note here
that I initially looked at using heads from the actual Genestealer Cultist box,
but those heads will not fit without significant trimming, as the bulbous
“necks” are made to fit in the very deep spacesuit cradles.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Orlock kit comes with a variety of slug-thrower weapons:
4 autoguns and 6 shotguns, though the only thing characterizing the shotguns is
an extra tube beneath the barrel, so having one “count as” the other is pretty
trivial, as they are already so similar looking. You also get arms for two
heavies, who can be armed either with a heavy stubber (convenient for cultist
squads) or a grappling spear-launcher thing, which could reasonably be a
“counts as” sort of weapon. As for flamers, web-guns, or any of the other
cultist special weapons you’re out of luck.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you have a specific idea for an “autoguns and heavy
stubbers” sort of neophyte squad, the Orlock box can handle that with aplomb,
with the only additional bits being a genestealer cult upgrade sprue. You could
also field such Orlock/Cultist conversions alongside the regular neophyte
hybrids, without a break in aesthetics. Looks good and easy to do!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.imgur.com/5yQHf3k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="775" height="320" src="https://i.imgur.com/5yQHf3k.jpg" width="309" /></a></div>
<h3>
Kitbash: Muscle Scouts (Goliaths)</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’ll be the first to admit I did not come up with this idea.
It’s been floating around since the Goliaths first got previewed, but it wasn’t
until I got the kit in my hands that I really saw the potential. When put next
to normal space marines the Goliaths look like enormous mutants, the
muscle-bloated swole-bros of Khorne’s nightmares. But when set next to Primaris
Marines? Well, they just kinda look like what you imagine Primaris marines look
like when not in their armor. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So here we have it: Goliath gangers kitbashed up with some
space marine scouts, intended to be fielded as scouts in an all-primaris army.
This provides the double advantage of providing some diversity to the
tragically same-y primaris models, as well as the tactical boon of including
scouts in your army. So with clippers, knife, glue, and (sadly) greenstuff in
hand, I took to turning the biggest, loudest, thuggiest necromunda gang into
the sleekest, quietest, and most subtle of space marine warriors. Was I
successful?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.imgur.com/siCoY4l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="588" data-original-width="784" height="240" src="https://i.imgur.com/siCoY4l.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /> I would say “mostly.” There are two ways to do the head swap, either by
dropping the scout head directly into the cradle in the Goliath torso, or by
chopping and pasting the scout head to fit the Goliath neck, which comes as a
separate bit. I’ve done the latter here, which makes the model look more
proportioned and natural (the former technique is easier, but makes the scout
look a bit squat and turtle-like). The scout hands do not fit onto the Goliath
wrists without a lot of cutting and fitting – on this model I had to use green
stuff to patch gaps, and the right wrist is an absolutely ugly mess up close.
Also, the Goliath armor is covered with spikes, rims, and vials of chemicals,
some of which I had to trim and file down in order to make it look more like
military armor. I played around with the idea of placing shoulder pads on the
mini to make them more closely resemble the official scout minis, but
eventually I decided to leave them off. If you happen to have extra space
marine shoulder pads, though, they fit on pretty well.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Like all kitbash projects, this one involves buying multiple
kits, which leads to a bad money/models ratio. That said, this kitbash is far
better than most, as a single box of scouts (which is meant to make 5 models)
provides <i>almost</i> enough bits to
convert all 10 Goliaths. The scout box comes with 5 boltguns, 5 shotguns, and 5
bolt pistol/close combat weapons, which means you can make two squads with
different armaments. The only issue is heads – only 6 heads come in the scout
box. Goliath heads might make for a clash of aesthetics in the squad, but you could
get away with some of them. The scout box also provides some grenades and
pouches which you can use to further tie the conversion together, like I’ve
done on the model’s right shoulder, above.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Using this kitbash will leave you with all the Goliath
weapons and the Scout bodies, which will just go into your bits box. A
necessary casualty of the kit-basher’s grisly work.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.imgur.com/WSdqY7F.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="775" height="320" src="https://i.imgur.com/WSdqY7F.jpg" width="309" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Overall I’m happy with this conversion, though it’s hard for
me to judge the Goliath box overall. They’re pretty unsuitable for standard
Guardsman/cultist conversions (they stand on the larger 30mm space marine
bases), but I would be happy to be proved wrong. I suppose they could make a
splash as Khornate chaos cultists, but the issue there is WYSIWYG – there is a
tragic dearth of pistols in the Goliath box (just two stub guns. TWO!) The
gnarly axes and repurposed tools put me in mind of some genestealer hybrid
potential, but that will take further experimentation.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In conclusion, I am very excited about the Necromunda gang
boxes. I have more examples of potential painting, head swapping, and
kit-bashing on my table, and will present them (as well as further analysis of
the kits used) in the future.<o:p></o:p></div>

He had a few things to trade, namely a Codex, & a few minis, and the new conversion sprue that I'd been drooling over.<br /><br />I'd recently bought a Patriarch & a Primus for cheap off ebay, but they were pretty low on my painting priority, so I offered them in trade. He gladly accepted & offered me all but a single Deathwatch mini in exchange (about $65 worth of swag) for the two HQ minis.<br /><br />Like I said, I'd gotten a pretty good deal for the pair, & it didn't feel like a fair trade, so I offered to paint one of them to help even the score. He picked the Patriarch.<br />

He wanted the color scheme to match fairly close to the one on the website & I did my best. I tell you what though. There are some minis that are an outright pain to paint. I disliked this guy for 85% of the time I was painting him. It only came together for me during the last few washes, but after that I was happy with him. The gamer was too, & he was happy to report it's the centerpiece for his army & has been doing a good job of wrecking opponents at the local tourneys as well.<br /><br />~MuninnMuninnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16712463133560807186noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1965954012087805729.post-8745240024800968282017-01-07T22:17:00.001-08:002017-01-07T22:17:33.006-08:00Slaughterpriest ConversionI picked up a White Dwarf containing a nifty Slaughterpriest a few months back, but didn't have any particular plans for him until last month.<br />
<br />
For a few years now the Corvallis wargaming club has done a Secret Santa mini exchange, where participants draw a name, and paint a mini for that person's army (usually an HQ or similar). I drew a buddy who played renegade IG who uses AOS Chaos marauders as troopers, so I decided to turn the White Dwarf mini into a commander. (sorry for the image quality, I didn't have time to take a proper picture before I wrapped him up)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK35hqpMSAZgRNBysDRvxqzGHEshOwADkJ-5O4mKSOgxYlhtIxs_cPOJ57BQbD9Sen84KXId6I7B1TVugzFQgw9MTF1CWEnSMmFPTGoIXWRRBNTtmsBHWwiF9CvNoqG9gpZjbk05TTBFBt/s1600/Slaughterpriest2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK35hqpMSAZgRNBysDRvxqzGHEshOwADkJ-5O4mKSOgxYlhtIxs_cPOJ57BQbD9Sen84KXId6I7B1TVugzFQgw9MTF1CWEnSMmFPTGoIXWRRBNTtmsBHWwiF9CvNoqG9gpZjbk05TTBFBt/s320/Slaughterpriest2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I didn't change too terribly much about the original mini.<br />
* Head swap with a Blood Angel (trimmed away the hair & modeled on a mohawk-ish haircut)<br />
* Weapon swap with plasma pistol<br />
* Left off the loincloth, so I added a Khorne bit from Khorne Bloodcrushers to cover some divets in the armor.<br />
* Replaced a skull-totem thing in his back with a Chaos Icon (from a chaos vehicle sprue, I think)<br />
* Modeled a daemonic face onto his flail<br />
<br />
The hardest part was probably finding the right head. The mini is a lot bigger than you'd expect (at least a head bigger than an AOS Eternal), so scale was an issue. Fortunately I've been collecting various heads for Deathwatch minis & one of them fit the bill nicely. Hope you enjoy.<br />

The owner wasn't totally sure, but he'd received several, and allowed me to take it to paint it up. If I'd seen the mini when it was still on its sprue it would have been easy to identify, but as it was.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.phdgames.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/wyrd-plastic-stalker-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.phdgames.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/wyrd-plastic-stalker-2.jpg" height="185" width="320" /></a></div>
I had to do some searching before I found it. Turns out it was a promotional mini for the 2nd edition Malifaux system, and their new line of plastic minis. I'd heard of Malifaux, but usually dismissed it, since the aesthetic never really appealed to me.<br />
<br />
This mini did though. It was simple in design, but well constructed, had a nice flow, and had a neat ash-waste scavenger look to it. Like I said, I didn't know what it was for, or what the mini represented, so I used it for my <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2013/08/how-to-paint-high-contrast-red.html">high-contrast red tutorial</a>. (three years ago, good lord I've been away a while)<br />

<br />
This is a Witchling Stalker from the "Guild" faction.<br />
<br />
Since I painted this guy in 2013 the Malifaux brand has really picked up in production & popularity. Several friends in my local gaming group now play it, and I decided to pick up a box as well. I spent a good while considering what leader/faction to start with, but ultimately decided to buy into a Gremlin master called the Brewmaster. He doesn't do much damage, but he gets opponents drunk (paralyzing them) and his minions, the Moon Shinobi, do the rest (that pun alone convinced me to buy the box).<br />
<br />
I'm wrapping up my masters program, so I still haven't painted a lick in months, but once the summer begins I'll be painting in earnest to prepare for the OFCC tournament in late July.<br />
<br />
Hope you're all well,<br />

Back in about 2004 when I was living in Japan, a friend of mine invited me to participate in a Christmas mini exchange. There were a bunch of bases nearby with a surprising number of fellow gamers, so the idea was that we would exchange addresses with someone on an online forum, & we would exchange painted minis with some of the other soldiers, sailors (and some civilians) around the Pacific. I ended up exchanging a Thousand Sons rubric marine for a Dark Elf shade painted by a guy in Australia. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fast forward to 2013. I decided to bring that little tradition to my hometown in Oregon. I proposed the idea to our local gaming group, & some jumped at it. We had about a half-dozen participants, and we made sure that each of the miniatures that were exchanged were ones that could be used in the recipient's army. I ended up painting Ulrick the Slayer for a friend of mine who played Space Wolves, and I received a Raven Guard assault sergeant from another friend.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This year a buddy suggested we do it again, and we had a lot more participants. I ended up with a friend that I'd already painted a mini for in the past. You may remember the Mega Nob from this year's Mini Madness. This time I decided to paint up a Killer Kan for him. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I managed to snag a Kan from Yorrick and started right away. Yorrick had already started painting it, but I didn't have time to strip it, so I used the Krylon Zenith painting technique that I used on my Khador warjacks a while back. </div>

<div>
It worked pretty well, and I was rather pleased with the results. I know I have a rather "clean" painting style, so it was nice to practice Orks again. I think I've gotten better over the years,and I've been able to use more weathering and shading techniques that give a dirtier, oily look. Here's the result.</div>

Sunday the various painters met at a local pizza place to exchange minis. Some folks weren't able to make it due to the holiday weekend, but the bulk of us were able to get there. </div>

<div>
After a little pizza we exchanged our miniatures. We'd pass each one around the table after it was opened so we could get a good look at the gift. There were a number of impressive paint jobs. Yorrick your received a Red Corsair miniature from a Betrayal at Cath mini, there were a few Daemon minis, a Dark Eldar, a few Orks, & a host of Inquisition minis (all painted by Yorrick). I made out like a bandit, since I received a Exalted Flamer of Tzeentch on Flaming chariot, plus it came with the extra Herald, both magnetized so they could be switched easily. This are the minis that were opened at the exchange.</div>

Homemade Halloween outfits.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ever since the twins were born I've been coming up with DIY costumes. The first year we made them Mandrake Roots from Harry Potter (we made like Terra cotta pots from felt, it was cute), last year we made them House Elves.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This year we broke away from Harry Potter & opted to embrace Pixar by doing the whole family as emotions from "Inside Out." (Fingers crossed, next year will be Star Wars)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My wife will be Sadness, my daughter is Disgust, my son is Fear, & I'm taking on Anger. I've always wanted to take a crack at a really creative costume, so this one seemed right up my alley.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwOTxhFXZdZ_DfXkvKerxn5DpeEh3rAl4v1RQFK6zEb1TFLBkIhLTeH-sihV0I52oihTyUjqCeL0jyjLZ99fC_RvqCErShY5WW7cH3XbaKLpGxbB_PHciCoKvxXIiqIMPK_Lcf-W1DfeOP/s640/blogger-image--1605260451.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="394" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwOTxhFXZdZ_DfXkvKerxn5DpeEh3rAl4v1RQFK6zEb1TFLBkIhLTeH-sihV0I52oihTyUjqCeL0jyjLZ99fC_RvqCErShY5WW7cH3XbaKLpGxbB_PHciCoKvxXIiqIMPK_Lcf-W1DfeOP/s400/blogger-image--1605260451.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Wardrobe-wise it's simple: white short-sleeved shirt, red tie, tweed pants. The rest of the look is kinda tricky though.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I've seen a few other Anger costumes but most revolved around red face-paint & a crown of flames. Good in spirit, but aesthetically lacking, in my opinion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I wanted it to look true-ish to the design, which meant a boxy, neckless, red noggin. I'm already a thick guy, so it shouldn't be too tough to pull off. Here was my concept design:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkQz6q_UYsIJ4n5iLfrCLUdh41WVyBzkGRlVDflM-lbUk34bZGKqmmCMqiV7IvSjx1m7rifYU5TSSJPs4nO6ZrBs_TLe5EkPpwAiXXbZb150-vDhyphenhyphenh7o_AdO-FbJLVefcYYCAX4F-X7lNh/s640/blogger-image--1347333707.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkQz6q_UYsIJ4n5iLfrCLUdh41WVyBzkGRlVDflM-lbUk34bZGKqmmCMqiV7IvSjx1m7rifYU5TSSJPs4nO6ZrBs_TLe5EkPpwAiXXbZb150-vDhyphenhyphenh7o_AdO-FbJLVefcYYCAX4F-X7lNh/s640/blogger-image--1347333707.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Everything in black is a single piece: head, collar, & tie. One head that'd fit on my shoulders. Originally there was supposed to be a fan in the top of the head that'd blow the flames like streamers, but it wasn't really feasible in the end.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
To start, I needed a base for the head. I measured out how much room I'd need to comfortably fit my oversized gourd inside. Turns out I'd need a medium-sized box or trash can to accommodate my needs (10" wide, 14" long, & at least 14" deep). I wanted it to be kinda rounded, so I went looking for a trash can.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This led to a short montage of me measuring trash cans in a number of Home Goods stores and sheepishly looking up & down the aisles for witnesses before upending the cans over my head to see how well they'd fit. I bet the video surveillance guys were having a few chuckles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I found one that fit the bill at Wal Mart. From there, I took it home trimmed away about 10" of the can, contouring it so it'd fit on my shoulders & chest. I used a pair of sturdy tin snips to cut the plastic. I tried to keep the trimmed section in a single piece, since I'd new it later. Then I drew out the basic layout of the face on the can, first in pencil, then Sharpie. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I took some paper & traced the shapes of the eyes, eyebrow ridge and teeth (adding about 3-4" to the teeth since I'd have to glue them in place later). I used Elmer's glue stick to paste the paper shapes onto the trash can portion that I'd removed earlier. The trick at that stage is to figure out what you want the front to be, then glue the paper to the backside, that way you aren't marring the pretty exterior.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I used my tin snips to cut out the general shapes of the eyes & teeth. I took the cut outs to my family's shop & made use of a bench grinder to refine them down to the marks of the paper stencil. I used about a 7/8" drill bit to make a circular cutout for the eyes. I probably wouldn't have been able to make such a precise cut without one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I went back to the house & used an exacti knife to put the final touches on the eyea & teeth cutouts. I took a heavy duty box cutter & trimmed away the entire mouth and eyeholes from the head. I didn't have to be too precise with the eyes, since the cutout eyes would be glued on top of them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I decided to end tere for the day, so I blue tacked the cutouts in place to see how well they'd work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The red irises are cut from a sheet of red foam</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Starting the next day, I set the cutouts aside & started to work with the red felt. I wasn't sure how to apply it at first, sonce I've had mixed results with fabric glue, but after a bit if research I decided to use a Hot Glue Gun & treat it like wrapping a gift. I drew two lines down the back, one centered, & another an inch off center. I glued one edge in place off center, then wrapped the felt around (pulling it snugly) so the next edge would fall on the center line & overlap the first. Te trick with a hot glue gun is to apply the fabric as you glue. If you wait more than a few seconds your glue with set & you have to scrape it away.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I then took scissors & cut away excess felt from the too, bottom, mouth & eyes, leaving about 1" of trim that i wrapped to the interior & glued in place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For the eyebrow ridge I cut the form into a section of thick fabric backing & wrapped felt around it as well. Fortunately you can still barely see the sharpie outlines of the eyes & ridge through the felt, so it wasn't too hard to place. Here it is with the eyes & ridge blue tacked in place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEJ7RR3ghwrU6dMXqSpl0JZFr8QRWSuiR2ja1QDsPGHY2C2QvuZVix89okl3x2N3uXKw9PvO3LuzlNhm2C-rXGnsSP1OqcJSW7VFxdGz-BKx-m2e5KaeltYr-UbkZrAZFKoYG58KHOXW7F/s640/blogger-image-580364648.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="321" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEJ7RR3ghwrU6dMXqSpl0JZFr8QRWSuiR2ja1QDsPGHY2C2QvuZVix89okl3x2N3uXKw9PvO3LuzlNhm2C-rXGnsSP1OqcJSW7VFxdGz-BKx-m2e5KaeltYr-UbkZrAZFKoYG58KHOXW7F/s400/blogger-image-580364648.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The next step was to create a collar. I cut two pieces of the fabric backing into a collar shape, hot glued white linen cloth around it, & glued the top edge of the collar onto the head. That way, even though it rests on my chest it still looks like a regular shirt. I have a tie that's close enough to the real Anger tie, so I simply loosen it enough so it hangs in place at the base of te head.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For finishing touches, I glued everything in place, & glued a lightweight black nylon cloth around the inside of the mouth. It's light enough that I can kinda see out of it, but dark enough so you can't see inside the head itself.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The whole project took about $35 and 7 hours of solid design & work to complete. Here's the finished product:</div>

Tau vs Raven Guard: My original army against one that I've been building for some time now. It looks like a Stormclaw style "Space Marines vs" box. If it is, I'm almost certainly going to get it. Looking at the minis, there's a bit of redundancy in the things I already own (like the pathfinders & stealth team), but I still need the Piranha, & all the Space Marine side.<div>

The new Tau include a great looking new Ethereal. It looks like an updated version of Aun Shi. I like it.</div>

I've been doing this for years now, and thought I'd share some of these characters with you.</i><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our final hero from the King for a Day is Broecksiog (pronounced Brock-Shogue), our Gnome druid. In this setting gnomes are more like forces of nature who take physical form. So one day a a gnome might pop out of a grove of trees, mountainside, or waterfall and feel like learning what it's like to be a squishy humanoid for a while. Broc popped out of nature with a green bread & a pair of stag horns. He joined our party, mostly because he wanted to see what kings were like, and decided to go along for the adventure <br />
<br />
The mini comes from the <a href="http://stonehavenminiatures.webstorepowered.com/Stonehaven-Miniatures-Gnome-Druid-Miniature/dp/B00NU9DF14?class=quickView&field_availability=-1&field_browse=7890427011&id=Stonehaven+Miniatures+Gnome+Druid+Miniature&ie=UTF8&refinementHistory=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Csize_name%2Ccollection_name-bin%2Cartist-bin&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Csize_name%2Ccollection_name-bin%2Cartist-bin&searchNodeID=7890427011&searchPage=2&searchRank=salesrank&searchSize=12">Stonehaven Miniatures</a>' gnome range. I even got the mini for free. I contacted Stonehaven about a miscast I received from the Elven Adventurers kickstarter, and asked if I could purchase the gnome and consolidate shipping. They said they'd simply send me both for free. Great customer service. Unfortunately Broecksiog wields a staff rather than a halberd, so I trimmed & reshaped the blade a bit.<br />

Keeping with the seasonal theme, and the fact he had a green beard, I wanted our druid to wear natural Spring colors. I wasn't sure what color to make the surcoat, but I wanted something light, so I eventually landed on light blue. Lavender might've been a better choice, but oh well. I'm fairly satisfied.<br />
<br />
With that, I've completed the whole party. Here's our motley band of misfits:<br />

This is one of the first times I actually completed an entire group of PCs before the end of the campaign (the other that I can remember was a D&D Castlevania game a few years back). As a whole group I think they stand together fairly well, while being individually pleasing minis. I'd say that Bran, the cleric stands out as being the most different compared to the other minis, just because he's taller, & doesn't share many colors with the rest of the party.</div>

During a few lectures I'd open a firefox window on my laptop & skim over gaming rumors, GW minis, painting blogs & whatnot. It was a bit of a distraction, but it kept my mind from wandering too far.<br />
<br />
During one break a guy approached me, said he noticed I was looking at miniatures, and asked if I knew anything about painting, and if so, if I ever did commissions.<br />
<br />
Why yes, yes I do.<br /><br />Apparently he really enjoys Imperial Assault, & wanted a few of his figures painted up nicely. A week later he handed them off to me along with his phone number and a request that I try to paint them close to their character portraits. Unfortunately I promptly lost the number after one of my kids "helped" clean out my laptop case. Regardless, I did my best on the minis he entrusted me to paint:<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The minis are kinda soft, like most PVC, but still sturdy enough to hold up to some handling. I boiled & reshaped the weapons & Jyn's posture a bit, but other than that they were fairly stable. They're far better minis than the <a href="http://store.fantasyflightgames.com/productdetails.cfm?SKU=DU15">Fantasy Flight Adventurers</a> I painted last year (<a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2014/05/day-3-david-gore.html">David</a> & <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2014/05/day-6-maki-watanabe.html">Maki</a>). Both are fairly well detailed, and although Jyn's face suffers a bit from the flatness you can see with PVC sometimes it wasn't the worst I'd dealt with. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Painting-wise I stayed fairly close, Painting Fenn's visor was an entertaining challenge that required a good bit of blending. I think I fudged the color of Jyn's coat a bit. The portrait shows a darker orange than I painted. Maybe I'll add a wash of Fuegan Orange to tone it down. We'll see if he likes it.</div>

I've been doing this for years now, and thought I'd share some of these characters with you.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
I think this makes my fourth or fifth elven ranger character (<a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2013/08/meet-pc-arahan-nolatari-elf-ranger.html">1</a>, <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2013/04/meet-pc-thia-telmoran-elven-ranger.html">2</a>, <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2015/09/meet-pc-vincent-half-elf-ranger.html">3</a>, 4th hasn't been photographed yet)<br />
<br />
Again from "King for a Day," Nightbreeze is our deadly, stealthy, two-weapon-wielding, ranger. In the campaign world there are a handful of godlike dragons that rule over the mortal, fey, and shadow realms with an iron claw, and Nightbreeze left her home to find out how to kill the dragon that rules over her elven nation. She first went to the dying king (since he once led a party to slay one of the dragons) but became wrapped up in the party's quest to find his successor.<br />
<br />
I thought the best mini to represent her was Reaper's <a href="http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/deladrin/latest/77035">Deladrin</a>. I knew I'd need a weapon swap, so I chose to use the Bones version. I needed two identical elven-looking blades on the cheap, so I found some loose <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Warriors-of-the-Last-Alliance">Lord of the Rings</a> minis at my FLGS and stole their swords. I paid a bit more than I wanted, but it works well.<br />
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/7ohIEmI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/7ohIEmI.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/KtuwMxT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/KtuwMxT.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/ZLAPFRk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/ZLAPFRk.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a></div>
I wanted to strike a balance between summery and stealthy, so I went for citrussy olive green armor, a dark blue undersuit, and deep green cloak. I had been planning on painting to scarf a light grey, but Yorrik reminded me that we'd just come across a yellow magic scarf that was perfect for a two-weapon fighter like Nightbreeze.<br />
<br />
More later,<br />

I've been doing this for years now, and thought I'd share some of these characters with you.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>Myev is one of the weirder members of our King for a Day band. She (or He maybe? You can never tell with reptiles) is an emissary from a nation of swamp kobolds attempting to open up trade deals with a neighboring kingdom. Unfortunately, the king was on his deathbed & his successor is missing, so She/He joined the hunt for him, & continues to try to negotiate along the way. At one point she tried to offer military support, cuz who doesn't want an army of kobolds? Myev follows a Cthulu-like entity, although we haven't really gotten into that facet of the character.<br />
<br />
There weren't a lot of options for Kobold magic users, so I decided to go the easy route & use the <a href="http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/kobold/sku-down/03024">Kobold Sorcerer</a>. Yorrik had it already, so all the better. Yes it has sunglasses, a fact I didn't realize until I started painting. It's like a little lizard Morpheus.<br />
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/YlnyPFA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/YlnyPFA.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/GBRzBHp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/GBRzBHp.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/ta0YQG3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/ta0YQG3.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a></div>
<i><br /></i> I wasn't sure about how to paint this mini. I'd blocked out seasonal-themed colors for the other PCs, but Myev here was the fifth character. I knew the player wanted Myev to have grey-green skin, so I started there. I then added some maroon to complement, & decided to make everything else dark & swampy. It makes the green pop fairly well, so I think it plays nicely.<br />

I've been doing this for years now, and thought I'd share some of these characters with you.</i><br />
<br />
Continuing the minis from Yorrik's "King for a Day" campaign, today's PC is Tarn Hillhaven, a Skald attempting to find his missing lord. It just so happens the old king was on his death bed & declared the missing noble his successor, so now the PCs are trying to find him before the whole kingdom erupts into civil war (it might have already, but we're in the mountains at the moment). He's more of a long-range character, shooting his bow, casting spells, & buffing the team from a distance.<br />
<br />
When I was deciding on color schemes I'd originally wanted to do a seasonal theme, where the cleric, <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2015/08/meet-pc-bran-human-cleric.html">Bran</a> represented Winter, our druid in Spring colors, the ranger in Summer, and Tarn here in Autumn colors (I'd forgotten we had a fifth PC, a warlock). I figure bards should be more vibrant, so I liked orange & a reddish purple for him.<br />
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/ZRp0DtT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/ZRp0DtT.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/TU7fXmZ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/TU7fXmZ.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a><br />

<br />
This is actually the first mini I've painted up from my <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2015/02/reaper-bones-kickstarter-received.html">Bones II kickstarter</a>. It's the Pathfinder <a href="https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Bones/latest/89026">Eando Kline</a> mini. I mentioned in my last Meet the PC how hard it was to find a good human minis wielding a bow, so I decided to look for something I could do a weapon-swap with. Fortunately Eando here has two empty hands.<br />
<br />
One of the good things about Bones minis is that they're really easy to carve, so it was really easy to cut a gap in the back of his hand, fit the whole bow into the gap then refill the back of the hand with greenstuff.Muninnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16712463133560807186noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1965954012087805729.post-66685153868633285172015-09-02T23:52:00.000-07:002015-09-02T23:52:06.191-07:00Meet the PC: Vincent, Half-elf Ranger<div class="MsoNormal">

by Yorrik. It was my chance to finally play a Dwarf Rogue, and my buddy Anthony’s

to branch out for this campaign, & opted for a Ranger. Specifically he
chose a half-elven military scout. </div>

In 13th Age, each character has a
“one special thing” built in as part of the character, a defining

was cursed to tell the truth whenever he’s asked a question. It made
negotiating kinda difficult.<o:p></o:p></div>

The mini is the <a href="https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Crusaders/sku-down/14401">Ivy Crown Archer </a>from Reaper’s Crusader
line. I actually bought this mini during my trip to Reaper HQ two years ago. It
is remarkably difficult to find a bow-wielding human that doesn’t look like
he’s been living in the woods for a decade, mountain man style. This guy, while
not perfect, fit the bill for a military bowman.<br />

To make him accurate, I modeled a some pointy corners to his ears to make him a half-elf, and replaced his sword with an axe. overall a simple conversion. I chose to give him an earthy red uniform matched with brown & bronze to give him a more utilitarian look. He's supposed to have a wolfhound companion, but
in the last encounter the big boss monster swallowed it whole. If we ever play again, and if he gets a new animal companion, I'll paint him something new.<o:p></o:p><br />

I've been doing this for years now, and thought I'd share some of these characters with you.</i><br />
<div>
<br />
Between wife, kids, work and school I really haven't played nearly as many roleplaying games as I'd like in the last few years. Playing fewer games mean fewer character, & fewer PC's to paint. It's been a while since I've shown off a PC though, so here's my latest.<br />
<br />
Earlier this year Yorrik wanted to DM a 5th edition D&D campaign he'd come up with called "King for a Day" that takes place on an island roughly based on post-Roman empire Ireland. The island is dominated by humans, but still had a number of fae/elves/dwarves to go around. Our band of adventurers/misfits/heroes were sent by a dying king to rally an army to prevent a civil war, then things went askew. It happens.<br />
<br />
Since this was my first time playing 5E, & probably one of the last chances I'd have to play for a while, I wanted to go for a class I rarely play, & I quickly narrowed it down to Cleric. I've always wanted to use this mini, so I let it dictate a good bit of my character.<br />
<br />
Bran here is a cleric of the Raven Queen, using the Death domain from the DMG). In the setting Gods are a bit more active in humanity & actually give insight to their clerics (called godwalkers). Bran tends to travel & deliver messages from his queen, which isn't always well received (probably why he has the big sword). The domain is an odd setup, so he's lightly armored, but has access to heavier weapons. In fights I put him at mid-range, able to cast spells, but run into melee when he needs to. The mini is Reaper's <a href="http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/holy/price/03498">Reeve the Pious</a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/ZtcOIqz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/ZtcOIqz.jpg" height="320" width="205" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/TvSuyao.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/TvSuyao.jpg" height="320" width="205" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/edChOJi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/edChOJi.jpg" height="320" width="205" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I like the mini, it's way overpriced for a simple design. I managed to purchase it when they released the high-lead P-65 line, so the cost was a bit more reasonable. The hooded face was a bit tricky. A lot of the paintjobs I saw emphasize his square jaw, but I tried to soften it a bit. I wanted to play up the winter/death domain a bit so I chose a colder palette, blues & greys. I think it reads pretty well, & gives a good impression of what the character is all about: a holy man who'll cut you down if he needs to.</div>

<span style="color: #cccccc;">I painted him in the same scheme as the Pariah above, which is my take on the Nekthyst Dynasty. I was a lot less generous with the gold this time around. I wanted to the shroud to look like a faded old garment that it was buried with, but it looks a bit more like an old rag to me.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cccccc;"> Finally, a Saim-Hann Autarch. I've had this mini since the 2006 codex came out, but I never had a plan for him. A while back another Navy friend & I decided to do a mini exchange. I was originally going to paint up a Phoenix Lord for him, but it turned out he already had one. I knew he played Saim-Hann, and they're a fast army, so I slapped Swooping Hawks wings on this guy & got to painting. </span></div>

<br />
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">
It's overall a nice figure, but there are a few spots I'm not thrilled about. You can't tell from the photo, but there are a few lumpy white area of the helmet. I had to replace my white paint as I was completing this guy & the new one wasn't really smooth. It's not too bad though, and still a good way to finish the project.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">
So there it is, the end of my Month-o-Minis challenge. I didn't quite finish in time this year, but there's always next year. I hope you enjoyed the result.</div>

I did manage to finish 30 minis, if you include the extra SoB & Seeker, but it wasn't what I was trying to do.<br />
<br />
So what happened?<br />
<br />
There were a few things I hadn't anticipated. My wife went to a teaching conference in another state for 5 days, leaving me with the kids. That wasn't an insurmountable challenge, but it did mean I had to be a lot more active at night, during my usual painting time. Then, when she was home, she was home. In May our work hours line up in such a way that we have relatively few waking hours together, so I use that time to paint as well. With her home I spent a lot less of my daytime painting as well. Add to that the fact I was taking a few surprisingly tough 5-week classes, & 5 days of family vacation, and you lose a ton of hobby time.<br />
<br />
I imagine it didn't help that I also had more large minis, and HQ/Lord characters than I've had in past years, and those are a lot more detailed/time consuming.<br /><br />Oh well, there's always next year.<br />
<br />
In the meantime I slowed my pace a bit, and I've been completing the minis I'd been intending to paint in July. The "27th's" mini was a commission I took on a while back as part of a deal from splitting the Stormclaw box. We couldn't decide who would get the rulebook, and I offered to paint a mini of his choice in exchange for the book. He gave me this Meganob and asked that I paint him red & orange.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/uXuNimj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/uXuNimj.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/XzpdBdr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/XzpdBdr.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
This guy is really scratch-built. I don't know where the bits come from, what the weapons are, or how it should look at the end of the day, so I figured I'd just ork it up, then add battle damage. I think it turned out pretty well, but I haven't gotten any feedback from the owner yet.<br />
<br />
A long long time ago when I first learned about 40k, I wanted to build an Eldar army. One my my friends, Abusepuppy (who now writes for Frontline), was keen to help me, and I was immediately drawn to Warp Spiders. For me, they were like the poster-boys of the Eldar. I bought a few blisters, but it never went far past that. They have a sleek look, but I've never had a lot of luck painting them. I always try to paint them using a real spider as inspiration, but it never really worked out. To date though, this is probably my most successful stab at it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/Uh0OKPd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/Uh0OKPd.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a></div>
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/5c9XGuQ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/5c9XGuQ.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Warp Spiders can get really busy really fast, so I wanted to keep it as uncomplicated as possible. All the cloth/underarmor was light grey, all body armor was green (except for the shins where I felt it needed a little black to balance it out), metal was silver, gun/shell black, & energy/gems were purple. Ideally, this kept it simpler, and cohesive. I feel like the green & light grey work well together, so it's pretty successful. I never know what to do with the gun barrel, so I was pretty content with my purple energy dots solution as well. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While trying to find another Xeno race I remembered the oft-maligned Vespid. I had a plan for this guy, but I really didn't have the time. I intended to paint it up like a wasp. Yellow armor with black sections where the plates meet to give it a really insectoid vibe, but that was going to take way too long, so I played around with grey with a few organic speckles. It wasn't my original vision, but it was awfully fast.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/trRKGmO.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/trRKGmO.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/8Utl0WK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/8Utl0WK.jpg" height="320" width="261" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm going to have to revisit this guy in the next few days, since I noticed the Tau symbol in incomplete. I might fix that next time I bring my paints down.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have the last two finished as well. but I thought I'd do it in two posts to keep it from getting too wordy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I have no idea why it was there or where it came from. They don't even exist in the codex any more. Either way, I managed to collect all the bits for this mini just before the start of my challenge. I modified a Necron scheme I'd tried a while back, although it ended up a bit too gold for my liking. I might strip him & start from scratch at a later date. We'll see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/uWxOZ6y.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/uWxOZ6y.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>

Looking at it now, I think the entire chest, and groin-plate should be black with gold trim. Maybe the shoulder portion of the arms as well. Eh, you live & you learn.<br />

I'm in the home stretch. I'd better be at least. At this point I've completed 28 minis: 26 "day" minis, and 2 extras (the SoB & the extra Seeker). For me to feel satisfied in completing my challenge I need to complete 3 more minis today. It'll be close, but I think I'll make it.<br />
<br />
The minis for last Friday and Saturday are a pair of Khorne daemons. A Bloodletter & Bloodcrusher. I didn't mean for it to happen this way, but that means for Daemon week I painted up two minis for each Chaos power. Not too shabby. Either way here they are.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/IiqeAo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/IiqeAo1.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/G2oVrEb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/G2oVrEb.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/81Q0IIC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/81Q0IIC.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
The 'Letters & Crusher use the same basic technique, although I used Krylon to basecoat the letter. After the base coat (Red Gore for the Crusher), I layered up to Blood Red, gave it a wash of Baal Red, then mixed highlight layers with "Leprous Brown." My old Leprous Brown dried up years ago, but I've been able to recrete it with a mix of Fiery Orange & Balor Brown. The dark crest & shoulders are just a wash of Leviathan Purple with the spikes picked out in Bleached Bone. The crusher is the biggest minis I've completed in the last 4 years of this challenge, so I'm pretty happy with that, but it did take a bit longer than I'd hoped.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/sHpjLtZ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/sHpjLtZ.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/6zBY3zL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/6zBY3zL.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In my personal life I've been asked to come back to work at the newspaper for a month as a temp, & I notice just how poorly balanced my photos are. I might have to go back & re-edit my shots.<br />
<br />
More later today.<br />

I've always had a soft spot for Nurgle's daemons. I was particularly excited when they got their own plastic plague bearers back in 2012. They're great looking sculpts, & paint really easily. Usually my painting style lends itself to clean lines, like Eldar, but I really like how my Nurgle minis turn out. I thank Athonian Camoshade wash for that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first mini is the Herald mini I <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2013/08/herald-if-nurgle-on-cheap.html">converted a few years ago</a> using a Plague Bearer champion head and a plastic<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Nurgle-Chaos-Lord"> Nurgle Chaos Lord</a>. It's half the price of the generic Herald of Nurgle and really effective.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/EGqqtpK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/EGqqtpK.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/ML46esd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/ML46esd.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/H237Fz7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/H237Fz7.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The nurglings are just an assortment if the extra bits from the Plague Bearer box. I think they were meant as decorations, or fun extras, but I figured I could just make a base for a future unit. That way, if I buy a few more units of bearers I'd also end up with a full unit of nurglings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/6xmF5YD.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/6xmF5YD.jpg" height="182" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="http://i.imgur.com/kb6u6iT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/kb6u6iT.jpg" height="182" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a few different color schemes here, since I didn't want them to all blend together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The dark ones use my usual <a href="http://ravenminis.blogspot.com/2013/01/test-mini-plaguebearer.html">plague bearer scheme</a> (Catachan Green through Nurgling Green with an Athonian Camoshade wash), The light ones are Nurgling Green through White Scar with an Athonian Camoshade wash), and one in the center is Dheneb Stone through White Scar with an Athonian Camoshade wash. Like I said earlier, it's a lot of Athonian Camoshade. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More tomorrow. I have a few more days, so we'll see what I can complete.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~Muninn</div>
Muninnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16712463133560807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1965954012087805729.post-44840798449770295012015-07-30T03:16:00.000-07:002015-07-30T03:16:00.807-07:00Days 20 & 21 Pink Horror & Herald of Tzeentch<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was really interested in the Khorne Daemonkin codex when it came out. It fixed a few things, added a few useful units for daemon players, & made me consider branching out a bit. As I evaluated my mini inventory it occurred to me that I have a lot more Tzeentch units then any other Chaos faction, so I decided then to start building toward a Tzeentch Daemonkin codex.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are two more additions to that goal:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/As8bsTV.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/As8bsTV.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/g5qIhgp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/g5qIhgp.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/LagatZD.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/LagatZD.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My Daemons have all been painted with a color scheme in mind. All Slaanesh are grey & pink, Khorne is red, Nurgle is green, & Tzeentch is blue. That's why all my "pink" horrors share a similar blue skintone. It fits thematically, since all pink horrors are actually two blue horrors, but honestly, I just like the look a lot better.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few years back, in December, I remember reading a message board where folks attempted to judge the worst-looking miniature of the year. There had been a few contenders, but this miniature was consistently rated in the top 5.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/7AES6CM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/7AES6CM.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a><a href="http://i.imgur.com/2wLt3Bi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/2wLt3Bi.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/PuGt3An.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/PuGt3An.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
Sure, he's goofy-looking, and none too intimidating, but he's got some nice detail. I've painted a lot of fire in my day, so I decided to switch it up & paint a bit of green flame for fun. The sculpt was a bit busy, especially the feathers on the back, but it's fine in my book.<br />
<br />
Nurgle later today.<br />

I'm catching up. I have several finished & several more close to complete.<br />
<br />
Today's mini are the start of Daemon Week, so I opted for a pair of Seekers of Slaanesh. I started painting them about this time last year for OFCC. I only needed them to be up to three-colors, so I didn't complete them to my personal standard, but now I have.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKrn2M3Xf74a7NTUglu-kizTQTJoBN52NAo0p92JNM3rM66UId-OnuMjLc1UuE1mwrkdaeWCwx04_a2bYXE94IJ8rviu71Z6g1G0gjK1vJ175IOD_ihhWWu5tAaemT9CyFSGZNi1sd8QY/s1600/19+Seekers1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKrn2M3Xf74a7NTUglu-kizTQTJoBN52NAo0p92JNM3rM66UId-OnuMjLc1UuE1mwrkdaeWCwx04_a2bYXE94IJ8rviu71Z6g1G0gjK1vJ175IOD_ihhWWu5tAaemT9CyFSGZNi1sd8QY/s320/19+Seekers1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi38tjkpiMR0-9J0x_iHmMFfHd_vd9yMZCobfHazmeODC05zVOtIkDTqS2_4zT8Dlw1KgZlUO2VRY37_1rmKbm7PbPB3q9ZBJhbMmc8ze_DJaGI_6fTdb310Mbb5xRsCp2Wb_36u-aBPiG5/s1600/19+Seekers2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi38tjkpiMR0-9J0x_iHmMFfHd_vd9yMZCobfHazmeODC05zVOtIkDTqS2_4zT8Dlw1KgZlUO2VRY37_1rmKbm7PbPB3q9ZBJhbMmc8ze_DJaGI_6fTdb310Mbb5xRsCp2Wb_36u-aBPiG5/s320/19+Seekers2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
There are 3 others that need to be completed, but I'm already behind, & didn't want to push the envelope too much.<br />
<br />
The Seekers were primed white, then the upper portions were washed with Tentacle Pink mixed with Lahmian Medium to make it more transparent & textural. The darker areas like the spines & sides were Emperor's Children. The white areas were simply primed, then lined with Tentacle Pink.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow and the next day should have a pair of Tzeentchy minis. More then.<br />

Long story short, I'd forgotten my Summer college finals were this week & I had to concentrate on the last week of classes. I've made some ground though, & I hope to be able to paint 2+ minis a day from this point forward.<br />
<br />
Last Friday's mini is an oooold Skink mini I bought when I first started painting. My sophomore year of high school a buddy & I paid for a miniature painting seminar at a local game store (which has since closed) & I walked out with a lizard men painting starter box. After that I picked up a few more blisters, including some metal skinks.<br />

<br />
This guy always stood out because of the weird head frill. I've never seen any other skinks with that. When I originally started painting the minis almost 15 years ago I slathered it in yellow, so I stripped it & decided to stay true to the original. I added a few purple spots on the head and back for character as well. He isn't my favorite for the month, but I've done worse.<br />
<br />
Next, I previewed this guy earlier, so I figured I should make sure I finished it before the end of the month. He's probably my favorite mini of the month, so far.<br />

<br />
I figured a bald eagle would be too stereotypical, so I opted for a Golden Eagle instead. Now that he's all completed I'm really pleased with how the conversion worked out. When I fist blue tacked the bits in place I was skeptical wince the legs looked so plain, but with the hip cloth you can hardly tell they come from a generic chaos troop. It's a good way to finish Fantasy Week.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I'll start posting minis from Daemon Week, and try to catch up as quickly as possible.<br />
<br />
More later,<br />

It looks like the sprues of Heresy Era marines that've been rumored. They look pretty great & should make some great armies. <div>
