The May Mini Challenge

This month I intend to complete a mini a day.

I, like every other miniature enthusiast I've ever met, have boxes full of half built, half painted, half loved minis. Projects that started strong but petered out, leaving behind a road of sad metal men created by the best of artistic intentions.

I've gathered together 31 of my models that I'd always meant to paint/finish, and devised an excuse to complete them all. These minis have been collected over the course of 15 years of painting and are just the tip of the iceberg. Most are Reaper & GW, some are limited editions, others are plastic troops, but all are wholly deserving of a little TLC.

Harlequin Deceiver

Last December I ended up painting a Necron Deceiver for a competition at a local game store.  I've never had any interest in working on one for a few reasons, 1. I didn't have any Necrons, 2. I didn't much care for the mini, 3. If I was going to shell out the cash for a C'Tan I'd buy Nightbringer instead.

As luck would have it though The store owner made me an offer I couldn't refuse: I'd get to enter the painting competition for free if I entered his Deceiver mini. So why not? His only real note was that he'd like it to look kinda like a clown.

Here's what I came up with:

I'm rather happy with how he came out. This was one of my first forays into painting a lot of checkers, and the quartering came out better than I'd hoped. However the red feels like it could be a bit too overpowering. Were I to start over I might do the sash black, or a deep grey. Plus the whole red/white/blue scheme makes me feel like it's screaming "America!"

Like I said though, I'm very happy with it. It doesn't hurt that it took first place in the competition & I got an Ogre Kingdom's Battallion out of the deal.

Bloodthirster

My latest miniature is a Bloodthirster for my Chaos Daemon army. The mini itself is a Daemon Prince Be'Lakor that came out about 6 years ago. It's a little small to represent a Thirster, but it makes it's presence known on the tabletop.

I painted the big guy over the course of three days, which is pretty darn fast for me. It helped that I have a pretty simple red technique, and there wasn't a real variety of colors necessary.

The Beginning

Welcome to my blog.

I've been painting miniatures since 1997, and have been striving to get better ever since.

I hope to use this blog to showcase my current projects, commissions, and techniques. A few of my friend's minis might make the occasional appearance as well. I'm far from the best painter, but I've got some fun ideas, and look forward to bringing them to the table.
