Days 30 & 31: Necron Lord & Autarch

Here are the last two minis I intended to complete in July.

The first is a limited edition Necron Lord that was only available by buying the original large army box from Games Workshop. I've had it for years, and I know it originally belonged to my old Navy roommate, but I don't really know how it ended up in my bits box. We often bought minis off one another, or swapped minis, or painted for one another, so I don't know if my current ownership of this guy is an accident, or he result of a trade.

Oh well. as long as I have him, he might as well be painted.
I painted him in the same scheme as the Pariah above, which is my take on the Nekthyst Dynasty. I was a lot less generous with the gold this time around. I wanted to the shroud to look like a faded old garment that it was buried with, but it looks a bit more like an old rag to me.

 Finally, a Saim-Hann Autarch. I've had this mini since the 2006 codex came out, but I never had a plan for him. A while back another Navy friend & I decided to do a mini exchange. I was originally going to paint up a Phoenix Lord for him, but it turned out he already had one. I knew he played Saim-Hann, and they're a fast army, so I slapped Swooping Hawks wings on this guy & got to painting.

It's overall a nice figure, but there are a few spots I'm not thrilled about. You can't tell from the photo, but there are a few lumpy white area of the helmet. I had to replace my white paint as I was completing this guy & the new one wasn't really smooth. It's not too bad though, and still a good way to finish the project.

So there it is, the end of my Month-o-Minis challenge. I didn't quite finish in time this year, but there's always next year. I hope you enjoyed the result.

Days 27-29: Mega Nob, Warp Spider, and Vespid

So July is over, and I didn't make my goal of completing 31 minis in 31 days. I did manage to finish 30 minis, if you include the extra SoB & Seeker, but it wasn't what I was trying to do.

So what happened?

There were a few things I hadn't anticipated. My wife went to a teaching conference in another state for 5 days, leaving me with the kids. That wasn't an insurmountable challenge, but it did mean I had to be a lot more active at night, during my usual painting time. Then, when she was home, she was home. In May our work hours line up in such a way that we have relatively few waking hours together, so I use that time to paint as well. With her home I spent a lot less of my daytime painting as well. Add to that the fact I was taking a few surprisingly tough 5-week classes, & 5 days of family vacation, and you lose a ton of hobby time.

I imagine it didn't help that I also had more large minis, and HQ/Lord characters than I've had in past years, and those are a lot more detailed/time consuming.

Oh well, there's always next year.

In the meantime I slowed my pace a bit, and I've been completing the minis I'd been intending to paint in July. The "27th's" mini was a commission I took on a while back as part of a deal from splitting the Stormclaw box. We couldn't decide who would get the rulebook, and I offered to paint a mini of his choice in exchange for the book. He gave me this Meganob and asked that I paint him red & orange.
This guy is really scratch-built. I don't know where the bits come from, what the weapons are, or how it should look at the end of the day, so I figured I'd just ork it up, then add battle damage. I think it turned out pretty well, but I haven't gotten any feedback from the owner yet.

A long long time ago when I first learned about 40k, I wanted to build an Eldar army. One my my friends, Abusepuppy (who now writes for Frontline), was keen to help me, and I was immediately drawn to Warp Spiders. For me, they were like the poster-boys of the Eldar. I bought a few blisters, but it never went far past that. They have a sleek look, but I've never had a lot of luck painting them. I always try to paint them using a real spider as inspiration, but it never really worked out. To date though, this is probably my most successful stab at it.

Warp Spiders can get really busy really fast, so I wanted to keep it as uncomplicated as possible. All the cloth/underarmor was light grey, all body armor was green (except for the shins where I felt it needed a little black to balance it out), metal was silver, gun/shell black, & energy/gems were purple. Ideally, this kept it simpler, and cohesive. I feel like the green & light grey work well together, so it's pretty successful. I never know what to do with the gun barrel, so I was pretty content with my purple energy dots solution as well.

While trying to find another Xeno race I remembered the oft-maligned Vespid. I had a plan for this guy, but I really didn't have the time. I intended to paint it up like a wasp. Yellow armor with black sections where the plates meet to give it a really insectoid vibe, but that was going to take way too long, so I played around with grey with a few organic speckles. It wasn't my original vision, but it was awfully fast.
I'm going to have to revisit this guy in the next few days, since I noticed the Tau symbol in incomplete. I might fix that next time I bring my paints down.

I have the last two finished as well. but I thought I'd do it in two posts to keep it from getting too wordy.

Codex Craftworld Eldar leaks are here

Just today we've gotten our first images of the new Eldar cover and minis. This includes the much-needed Jetbike Warlock (now called a Skyrunner) and what appears to be a Swooping Hawks themed Autarch. Everything looks good so far, and I imagine we'll be seeing more in the next few weeks (fingers crossed for plastic aspect warriors). As a side note the fact it's called Craftworld Eldar gives me a glimmer of hope that we may someday see an Exodite Eldar mini-dex. It's unlikely, but I can dream.

Ordo Fanaticus Club Challenge: What I Learned from my first Tournament

This weekend I participated in my first big 40k tournament. More to the point, I played more 40k in two days than I have in the last two editions (about 7 years, really). Ordo Fanaticus Club Challenge (OFCC) is a more casual tourney, with more emphasis on painting and sportsmanship than other competitions. They sell themselves as a place to play if you've never been to a tourney before, which really appealed to me.

In truth, it was difficult at times, but I enjoyed my first experience.
Our Team, the Imperial Fist Bumps
So if you're thinking about going to your first tourney, here are a few things I wished I'd known beforehand. (plus a few shots of some of the minis I liked)
One of the best parts was seeing all the well painted armies, and models that I've never seen in person before, like this Ultraforge mini

Get a Board
The first, and most important lesson I garnered from my first tourney is definitely to get a display board.

Walking around, you could see the boards were extensions of the armies. When I first arrived teams would display their game boards along the tables, and often the best boards got the most of attention.

The high quality displays matched the bases of the minis themselves, incorporating themselves into the scenery, sharing details like terrain, lighting effects, or bits. A lot of people clearly spent a lot of time creating, painting & tricking out their boards & it was really impressive.

Beyond the artistic appeal, the boards serve an important function as well: Carrying your army. Loading and unloading my daemon army from it's carrying cases took a long time, and moving it from table to table was cumbersome. People with their own game boards were able to simply put their armies in place & walk to their next game. After my first game I realized it was a real hassle to be without, so I borrowed a tupperware tub lid from the terrain containers and used that to haul my army around for the rest of the tourney.

If you want to go to a tournament get a board. It doesn't have to be fancy. One of my teammates bought a cork board on his way to Portland. It worked great. Get a board.

It's Tiring
You shouldn't leave a day of gaming feeling like you spent a whole day at work, but that's how I felt at the end of the first day. We spent 9 hours gaming, with a few extra hours of lunch, inspecting people's armies, and whatever it is people chose to do afterwards. (I also chose to drive to and from the event each day, which added 3 hours to my commute each day)

I'm also night owl so the 8am start took a small toll on me as well.

By the end of my third game I was leaning my back hard against a nearby pillar to help ease my spine. I was tired, my back ached, and my feet were throbbing. Then I drove another 90 minutes. I was sore.

So quick bits of advice to ease your body:
* Wear comfy shoes (one of my teammates suffered for wearing flip flops)
* Drink plenty of liquids
* Sit when you have the opportunity

in one battle I faced a pirate themed Daemon list that featured a Helchicken & a Helparrot.

Take everything you'll need
This might seem like a bit of a no-brainer, but if you're used to playing pickup games with friends, you might not always take all the essentials along with you. The idea is to be properly prepared for each game, or able to help out a teammate should they have forgotten anything. Some items include:

* Base Rule Book
* Your army book(s)
* 5+ printed army lists (one for yourself, each of your opponents, & the tourney organizers)
* Templates
* Dice
* Measuring Tape
* Glue

That last one is important. My Be-lakor mini lost his arm, & I saw several necron wraiths snap in transit to their next game. Minis are being packed, unpacked, moved from table to table, and placed in some pretty precarious situations during games. There's a really good chance something will break, & when it does it's important to have glue ready to fix it.

Be Prepared to Lose
OFCC is billed as a friendlier tournament. Before the event teams send in their lists to admin who rate how aggressive the list is, and they discourage powerful, hyper-competitive lists. That being said, there were still a lot of Imperial Knights, Wraithnights, Waveserpent spam, and I even faced a Firestorm Redoubt (a 600+ point fortification of death). Even a friendly competition got pretty competitive, so be ready for that.

That being said, even when I was losing I kept it friendly. Laugh when your dice get the better of you. At one point my Flying Daemon Prince Warlord with 4+ Feel No Pain was shot from the sky, took a wound for falling, then was promptly blown to bits by a D-strength missile without a save (If my math is correct, there's only a 0.8% chance of that happening). In another game I lost my Lord of Change to the first round of shooting from Orks (!).

The dice gods were laughing at me. (Others noticed too & even offered to buy me new ones)

I laughed though. It doesn't do you any good to get upset about dice rolls beyond your control. All you can do is joke about the situation and change your battle plans moving forward. I ended up winning the game against the Orks, & even tied 10-10 against the Astra Militarum player with the enormous fortification.

Make some Friends
Finally, tournaments are a rare opportunity to meet fellow hobbyists from all around. The Portland tournament drew folks from Spokane and Canada (each over 300 miles away) so take some time to connect with other people who are passionate enough about the hobby to come long distances to compete.

I played five games over the weekend & all of my opponents seemed like good people. Each game was slated for three hours, which is plenty of time to get to know someone. My first game was against a guy named Aaron, & it turned out we both served as military cryptologists, and even went to the same school. It's great to make those kind of connections anywhere, let alone with someone who shares the same pass-time. Plus if you continue to play tournaments there's a good chance you'll see the same faces over and over again, so making a few connections is a good way of ensuring you'll have a good time at future events as well.

TL: DR
Going to your first tournament can be a bit daunting, but you should go prepared to to meet some fun people, play all of your games with class, and to be sore for a few days afterwards. It'll be worth it though.

Day 23: Striking Scorpion

In truth, I'd intended to paint a ton of Tau this week. Sadly I didn't get them prepped in enough time to do what I wanted. I should still have a few this week though. Instead, I've been blowing through some Eldar Aspect Warriors.

I actually bought this Striking Scorpion on Thursday. I needed another xenos that I could paint quickly and this mini was primed and for sale on commission at my local game store. I picked it up & finished him a day later.

Unlike the Dire Avenger, this guy fits with my homebrew quite nicely. I purposefully replaced the typical yellow accents with gold for a fairly petty reason. I'm an Oregon State alum, and I can't bring myself to field a unit adorned in Green & Yellow.

Regardless the mini came together nicely, and I'm quite fond of the metallic tweak I made. Who knows, if the next month's Codex shows the Striking Scorpions to be a great asset I might have to complete a whole unit.

Day 22: Dire Avengers Exarch

The kids didn't really cooperate. So this guy took longer than anticipated.

I saw this mini one day in my local game store. I really liked it so I bartered a bit for it. Never really did anything with it until now.

I'm not particularly happy with the back banner since it was rushed, but once I get a bit of time I'll fix it & paint a design for it. That being said, it's a pretty solid mini. I don't know if I'd ever actually use blue Dire Avengers, since they completely clash with y own homebrew Craftworld, but I do like the motif. It also occurs to me that this is like my third red, white, & blue mini this month.  Apparently I'm patriotic.

Day 21: Dark Reaper Exarch

Okay, so I'm a few days behind but I'm catching up. Tuesday's mini is the 2nd Generation Dark Reaper Exarch. Out of the three different Dark Reaper lines this one has always been my favorite. The old ones just look old, and the new ones have a weird egg-head that I can't get past. The new heads look like they'd be perfectly at home on a Lego body to me.

I started painting this guy years ago. I'd free-handed a Tim Burtonesqu swirl design on his gun, but I started to detest it. Instead of fixing it or starting over I moved on to new minis and shelved him. No time like the present to finish it up though. To make things easy on myself, I just got rid of the design. I'll probably go back and reehand a few skulls or the Aspect symbol on the gun just cuz that would look good.

One fun thing. It isn't as noticeable in the picture, but I found a decent way to make a nice warm purple color without using the or Warlock Purple. I just painted a standard progression from Lich Purple to White Scar, and hit it with a red wash. It looked surprisingly good, and should be simple to duplicate.

Should have Wednesday's mini up in a few hours as long as the twins cooperate.

Day 19: Alaitoc Pathfinder

I'm not going to lie. I have no idea how I came by this mini. I don't know if I bought it, or traded it, or if it was given to me, but it's been kicking around my boxes for as long as I can remember. I really like the new Ranger minis, and I'm kinda "meh" on the older ones, so I've never had a real good reason to paint this guy.

I don't ever plan on actually using this guy (unless I get into some Rogue Trader game or something) so I figured I'd paint it up as a traditional Alaitoc Pathfinder. Blue & Graveyard Earth look really good together & paint really easily, so it seemed like the best way to go. I think he turned out pretty good for only having a few hours of paint in him.

New plastic Farseer mini

I've been pretty busy lately since I'm serving as Daddy Daycare full time, so I've been a little slow in posting this from over at Faeit212, a plastic Farseer.

I'm happy to see this model actually. In general I really like the move to plastics, although I wish there were more bits options. Even the metal/finecast minis have alternate weapons & head choices, so you'd think the plastics could add a few options as well.

Either way, The build looks solid, and entirely on point with the other Eldar HQs we've seen. I look forward to seeing this this built as opposed to in a clampack.

Death from the Skies cover

Loraziel over at Dakka Dakka posted this shot of the rumored Death from the Skies flier compendium.
There are some conflicting rumors (surprise surprise) about this release.

 initial rumor was that there would be a number of new fliers including
A new Tau flier
A new Eldar flier
The Dark Eldar Voidraven Bomber
and a new Tyranid unit called the Harpy.

meanwhile there's another rumor saying that this is just an update that brings all the current fliers in line with 6th edition rules (plus adding the DE Bomber).  I'd obviously see some new fliers, but only time will tell.

40K Giveaway: Winner's Choice

The first giveaway got a really positive reaction, so I thought I'd give it another shot.

Unfortunately there was a bit of a snafu when I mailed the Emperor's Champion. I sent it in time to get to Skywatcher before Christmas, but it never made it. I offered to buy him a new Champion, but we agreed on another mini from my bits box instead.

Word to the wise: Always buy the package tracking.

Okay, back to the giveaway.

Here's my attempt at an M. Night Shyamalan twist: There's more than one mini to choose from.

A Space Wolf scout
An early edition Plaguemarine w/melta
An XV15 Tau Stealth suit
A Legion of the Damned marine
An Eldar Warpspider
A Warlord Vale Swordsman
A Clan War Scorpion samurai

In another mini twist (Ha!), there are two non 40k minis up for grabs as well. I have a lot of RPG miniatures kicking around, so I thought I'd add a few to the lot.

The rules are simple, but modified this time:
1)  Be a public follower of this blog (I want to see you in the 'Members' gadget on the right).
2)  Leave a comment below giving your first and second choice of minis from the photo above.
3)  If you promo my giveaway on your blog or website you'll be entered to win twice (Make sure to let me know if you do).
4)  If you win the item, come back and leave a comment once you've received it saying,"Hey, I got it!"

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Forces of Muninn

I have a difficult time focusing at times. While painting, working, or doing chores i get easily distracted and can move quickly from one task to another. This also come into play when building armies.

As it stands, i have a largish Raven Guard army that I haven't touched in years, a good sized Daemon army and, a smattering of various other armies/units.
These have probably been the most successful at keeping my attention, probably thanks to the variety of colors & techniques I've used for them.

Should a particular mini or unit might entice me I'll usually pick it up, whether or not I have a good reason buy it. Over the years this has added up a bit, so now I'd like to get grasp on my ever-burgeoning bits box, & put some of these minis to good use.

Now that Allies are a thing I'll be trying to build small contingency forces rather than whole armies. Here are two.
The first are the Fire Angels. I started these guys a few years back to start a fresh, but still canon, army. I only got up to finishing 11 marines before getting distracted by college, but now I can breath a fresh life into them as allies, while slowly adding a mini here & there. Plus I'd really like to see that Librarian on the table.

These are more of a pet project. I've started calling them Craftworld Verdain, but only have a grasp on their colors, not their fluff. I have a number of other Eldar kicking around, so whenever I get the yearning to paint something green I'll probably add to this group.We'll see what gets painted up first, Wraithguard or Guardians.

I also have a small handful of other budding ally groups, but I'll get to those in later posts.

Day 19: Wraithguard

Aaaand, another Eldar.

I've had this mini for almost 12 years. One of my high school buddies painstakingly painted one up and I figured I would too since his looked so good. I didn't have any kind of idea where to start though, so I never did. I like it a great deal, although in my eyes he isn't truly complete yet. I painted the sash, but I intend to freehand the Craftworld symbol on the cloth (the same symbol that's on his forehead). I still haven't come up with a name or finalized their back story, but I'm working on it.

Day 15: Ork Burna & Farseer

So this project wouldn't be called a Challenge if it weren't challenging, & I hit my first speed bump.

I ended up putting in a 13+ hour workday one day, and had to work early the next, so I didn't finish Monday's mini on time. I managed to get it about 70% of the way before I had get to bed. I rallied yesterday though & got them both done.

Here's Monday's mini. An old metal Bad Moon Burna Boy.
 He's a little sloppy looking, but really, it's an ork. I don't even remember why I have this guy. I think these guys came in blisters of two, so I probably went halfsies with a buddy on the blister just so I could have something different. I painted him up as a Bad Moon, since I haven't done much with yellow so far, and I don't know if I've ever seen one in real life.

Yesterday's mini is a return to my Eldar scheme. This time it's a Farseer though.
This guy I've had since I got out of the Navy in 2005. I used this Farseer's spear as part of the base for a Space Wolf Runepriest, so I ended up having to create a new one for him. What you see here is actually a shaved down chainsword with some added gems.

Day 13: Eldar Guardian

Around the time the last Eldar codex came out I bartered with a friend for some Eldar bits for a test mini. I ended up mocking up a color scheme that I liked, but newver actually painted it, until Sunday.

I always really liked the Uthwe color scheme, but I also really like green, so this was what I came up with. Black under armor, green plates, with bone accents. To me it looks pretty cohesive, and different enough from any existing Craftworlds.
